Types of Engraving
Seal-engraved: a reverse and deep cut impression in the ring face the design is only seen when an impression is made in wax
Surface engraving : is what might be thought of as standard engraving it is shallow cut and used for monograms, inscriptions and is cut in the positive
For show engraving: This is as deep as seal but in the positive often used for portraits
Champlevé and basse-taille these are higly specalised techniques for preparing glass to metal bonding In champlevé troughs or cells are engraved leaving thin borders of metal to contain individual enamel colours. When fired the metal portions remain visible and serve to create the framework of the design. The often complex engraving and carving seen through the coloured enamel can be a tour de force of the engraver’s art.
Basse-taille enamelling is similar to champlevé with the artist engraving a pattern in low relief over which the enamel is applied. By varying the depth of the engraving in different areas the engraver can create a brilliant interplay of patterns which add depth and variety to the surface of the piece.
depending on the design you choose we will disscus the best type of engraving for your ring.
Coats of arms
The most important thing to remember about coats of arms in the United Kingdom is that there is no such thing as a coat of arms that is granted to a surname. They are granted to individuals only. ... That person then has the right to pass down the arms through the legitimate male line of their family.
Armorial bearings are hereditary. They can be borne and used by all the descendants in the legitimate male line of the person to whom they were originally granted or confirmed. To establish a right to arms by inheritance it is necessary to prove a descent from an ancestor who is already recorded as entitled to arms in the registers of the College of Arms College of Arms this link will open in a new page and inform you when others will not.
This is the only genuine personal coat of arms but it does not mean that you cannot adapt an existing one if your heart is set on it. Our Heraldic engravers will help design a crest based on your family name.
